Pink Bull Formulation 1 advisor Helmut Marko admitted he was puzzled by Max Verstappen’s decision-making whereas watching ‘all hell break free’ through the Spanish Grand Prix’s last laps.

Throughout an interview on ServusTV on Monday night time, Marko recalled the “decisive second” that Verstappen’s race unravelled when he misplaced third place to Charles Leclerc following a security automobile restart on lap 61.

Verstappen’s lurid second on the restart triggered a sequence of incidents that ultimately resulted within the Dutchman apparently intentionally driving into George Russell as his frustrations boiled over after the Mercedes driver had tried to capitalise.

“On the straight, I’d say Leclerc drove into Max’s automobile,” Marko mentioned of the Ferrari driver. “Then got here the state of affairs with Russell [when the Briton attempted tp pass into Turn 1 but went off the track]. And it’s important to say, Max is aware of the rules intimately. He instantly mentioned, ‘Hey, he was uncontrolled, and that’s why I needed to go large.’

“The interior dialogue was that it was 50-50. And because it occurred proper after the security automobile interval, the impression of a 10-second penalty is way larger than if it occurs mid-race. So, that was one factor. Max didn’t wish to give the place again. However he was instructed to take action – he did it underneath protest.”

After reluctantly handing fourth place again to Russell, the reigning world champion had one other conflict with the Mercedes driver on lap 64. “Max lifted off the throttle, so all of us assumed he was letting Russell by way of. After which instantly he accelerated once more,” Marko recalled. “I don’t know what sort of misjudgment or thought course of was occurring inside him. After which, as they are saying, all hell broke free.”

Verstappen was slapped with a 10-second penalty, leading to a 10-place end. The stewards additionally handed down three penalty factors, which places him on the precipice of a race ban.

“There have already been points up to now,” Marko mentioned of Verstappen’s earlier clashes with Russell. “It was pointless, and plenty of factors misplaced. However, due to all of the incidents and improper selections that sadly occurred, feelings merely obtained the higher of him.”

Verstappen ultimately issued an apology on social media for the unsportsmanlike transfer, calling it “not proper” and saying it “shouldn’t have occurred”.

Marko, who agreed with the stewards’ 10-second penalty, joked that an “admission from Max doesn’t come simply”.

“And don’t overlook – he’s already obtained a little bit of a feud occurring with Russell,” he added.

Pink Bull additionally opted to not have a prolonged debriefing on Sunday night time as a result of Max was “so heated”.

Marko defined: “Everybody goes their very own manner. And when Max is in a temper like that, the very best factor is to depart him alone.”
