Two-time Method 1 champion Mika Hakkinen has revealed he critically questioned his future in motor racing following his life-threatening crash on the 1995 Australian Grand Prix.

Talking on the Up To Pace podcast alongside his former McLaren team-mate David Coulthard, Hakkinen detailed the psychological and bodily hurdles he confronted following the accident in Adelaide that left him with a fractured cranium.

Throughout qualifying, a puncture despatched Hakkinen’s McLaren airborne and right into a high-speed spin earlier than the automotive crashed into the tyre barrier on the surface of Brewery Nook.

“Once I was sideways and I hit that vast kerb within the exit and the automotive launched within the air, that was the second I realised that is going to be an enormous one,” Hakkinen mentioned. “The automotive did not decelerate in any respect, and I knew the barrier was not distant. It was so excessive velocity, after which the automotive was spinning within the air.

“It was difficult to grasp after I was going to hit the wall. Usually whenever you hit the wall, you maintain the steering onerous as you’ll be able to, and you set your muscle mass onerous, and I did not see that.

“The issue was that after I tried to maneuver my arms or attempt to transfer my legs, no likelihood. And I mentioned, ‘Oh s***.’ When the man got here in entrance of me and mentioned, ‘Simply now chill out, do not do something, attempt to keep calm.’ Then any person turned off the lights.”

Hakkinen suffered a cranium fracture, inner bleeding and a blockage in his airway. F1 security and medical delegate Sid Watkins and volunteer docs Jerome Cockings and Steve Lewis saved his life, with Cockings performing an emergency tracheotomy trackside. He remained hospitalised for about two months.

“The primary individuals who I noticed, really who got here to see me, have been Ron and Lisa Dennis, and the very first thing I noticed was Lisa Dennis in entrance of me. However in fact, I used to be beneath a lot treatment, I assumed I used to be in heaven.

“Then I seemed to the left and Ron Dennis was standing there. So I assumed, this isn’t heaven,” he added with amusing.

Regardless of the extreme head trauma, Hakkinen was again behind the wheel testing an F1 automotive simply months later. However the 57-year-old admitted the choice to return was onerous to make.

“I believe this choice second is among the most difficult,” he defined. “You possibly can simply say, ‘Let’s transfer life a distinct route and let’s overlook motor racing.’

“You need to make this choice alone, and it’s important to undergo so many alternative issues in your life that approach. What would you like out of your life? What’s the way forward for your life? The questions are coming to your head on a regular basis: ‘A few months in the past I practically simply died, so do you need to return to this identical enterprise?'”

In the end, Hakkinen’s motivation to drive outweighed his apprehension.

“It’s such an enormous ardour, motor racing and driving the automotive, controlling this unbelievable Method 1 automotive at a really excessive velocity,” he concluded. “When the whole lot works, and so they’re doing nice teamwork with the mechanics, with the engineers. So I made a decision to return, and I do not know if it is one thing to do along with your youth whenever you’re younger, your ego, you need to show that approach, sure, I can do it.

“I made the choice to come back again, nevertheless it wasn’t a simple one, you understand. You need to work in your mindset. Whenever you sit in a automotive after an accident, it’s important to put your mindset to not take into consideration the worry of the crash. It can occur once more. You’ll crash once more, however to not be afraid of that crash.”
