Hungarian GP stewards defined why they had been extra lenient with Carlos Sainz, issuing solely a five-second penalty for his collision with Oscar Piastri.

Piastri, who was main the Formulation 1 race in Budapest throughout the opening section, was almost taken out by Sainz on lap 38 whereas the Spaniard was being lapped by the McLaren driver. Regardless of the incident, the Williams man obtained solely a five-second penalty, with the stewards stating there was a mitigating issue.

“The Stewards decided that the motive force of Automobile 55 was wholly liable for the collision with Automobile 81. Whereas the usual penalty for inflicting a collision is a 10-second time penalty, the Stewards recognized a mitigating issue.

“On the level of the incident, the positioning of Automobile 55 relative to the circuit and the opposite vehicles meant that Automobile 81 was not seen to the motive force of Automobile 55 previous to the tried overtake. Though the motive force had been knowledgeable that Automobile 81 was approaching, the Stewards accepted that the restricted visibility decreased the diploma of culpability.

“Taking this mitigating circumstance under consideration, the Stewards decided {that a} five-second time penalty, fairly than the usual 10-second penalty, was acceptable.”

Piastri retired from the Hungarian GP later as a consequence of a mechanical failure. Sainz completed 18th, two laps behind race winner Norris.
