Former System 1 driver and F1 TV reporter Jolyon Palmer has defined why the Canadian Grand Prix supplies an vitality administration problem for the drivers.

Talking on the F1 TV Weekend Heat-up, Palmer branded Circuit Gilles Villeneuve as a “circuit of two halves” and argued that it should be handled that manner in the case of harvesting and deploying electrical energy within the new-regulation vehicles.

“The problem is it is a circuit of two halves. You have acquired the primary, and most of it’s very easy to recharge since you’ve acquired quick bursts. You have acquired huge stamps on the brakes. It is a tough circuit for the brakes. They’re often on the restrict of overheating round a spot like this, and that is nice for recharging,” Palmer defined.

“What’s then tough is the run out of the hairpin up in direction of that closing chicane since you’ve solely acquired the chicane to recharge one thing earlier than you get one other run to finish the lap in qualifying. You have acquired fairly a low recharge restrict as properly.

“It is the lowest we have seen to date: six megajoules that you would be able to harvest via a lap, so you’ve got loads of alternative to try this within the first two-thirds of the lap. However then you have to ensure you can nonetheless high the battery up within the latter half as a result of you are going to want that vitality on the longest straights, that are late on.

“So, I am actually to see how it is going to unfold as a result of the primary half of the lap, you’d suppose that is completely driving as regular, however will you must have half an eye fixed on the later elements to just remember to do not run out of juice?”

George Russell secured pole place for the Canadian Grand Prix dash race. The Briton might be joined on the entrance row by his Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli. McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri will begin third and fourth, with Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc fifth and sixth on the dash grid.
