Former Pink Bull mechanic Calum Nicholas believes that even when Max Verstappen had prevented his opening-lap crash on the Dutch Grand Prix, the group merely lacked the tempo to struggle for the rostrum positions.

The ultimate Formulation 1 grand prix at Zandvoort bought off to a dramatic begin. Whereas the rain had cleared earlier than the beginning of the race, there have been nonetheless some damp patches on the monitor. Dwelling hero Verstappen dipped onto a moist spot as he got here across the last banked nook, leading to a heavy shunt into the wall.

Whereas his race was over, his team-mate Liam Lawson, who was standing in for an injured Isack Hadjar, went on to complete seventh and choose up six factors for the Milton Keynes outfit.

Talking on the group’s official Speaking Bull podcast, Nicholas argued that Verstappen wouldn’t have been capable of obtain rather more than Lawson did if he had continued with the race.

“One of many issues that we have maybe struggled with a bit of this 12 months is after we’re in gusty, windy situations, the automobile simply appears a bit of bit unhappier,” Nicholas defined.

“It creates a bit of bit extra work for the drivers and we have set to work out what it’s that is on the backside of all that. However I do not suppose it is a catastrophe.

“Liam most likely had a boring, lonely race. Huge hole forward of him, huge hole behind him. However that was simply the tempo of the automobile. Even when Max had accomplished this race and never had the incident on lap one, I believe that is just about the place he would have ended up as properly, in that area between the frontrunners and people behind us. I actually do not suppose that there was much more to supply this week.”

McLaren’s Lando Norris gained the Dutch Grand Prix and was joined on the rostrum by Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli and George Russell.
